• Kabul's first ever water park opens

Residents of the Afghan capital Kabul have been cooling off in the city's first ever water park. Young Afghans say they are delighted with the newly-opened facility and keen to ride a few waves. Kabul's newest attraction is making quite a splash. The Kabul Water Park, with its towering water slides and multiple swimming pools, is proving to be refreshing destination on a hot summer day. The centre, on the western side of the city, has been especially popular with university students who have welcomed the positive changes in the former war-torn country. "I feel really happy because nowadays there are a lot of facilities for us in Afghanistan, around four or five years ago we didn't have anything, but now we have everything," says 17-year-old Ahmad Edris. • War weary Afghans enjoy first amusement park in Kabul

The Afghan capital, Kabul, has opened its first amusement park. Families in Kabul, where there are over five million people, have seen their fair share of bombings and attacks. "In order to bring smiles to the faces of our people we have decided to build this park in the capital of Kabul for the children and residents of Kabul to enjoy and be entertained whenever they want. Our people deserve to have such a park that they can enjoy," owner of City Park, Almas Qasimi said. Farooq Safi brought his children to this amusement park and he agrees that it's a nice addition to the city. "There is no doubt that there was three decades of war in our country but God willing we are so delighted right now to have such a park in our city, that we can enjoy with our children and family here," he said...

Kabul resident Mohammad Safi agrees. "We didn't have anything for fun, we used to swim in ditches before, we didn't have facilities such as this. This place is perfect, it is clean and safe for health." He comes to swim for an hour everyday. The facility can host up to 1,000 visitors at a time and has become a favourite destination for young Afghans. It has several slides and also a wave pool that mimics the ocean. Afghanistan depends heavily on foreign aid, but big investments like the Kabul Water Park are signs that the economy is growing. The project took a year to build and cost five million dollars. It was a joint venture between Hafizullah Bayat and nine other shareholders. Bayat says he hopes this project will attract other investors to the country. "If we want to stand on our own feet we have to accept risks, we must invest in projects such as these, so we can win the confidence of our people," said Bayat. It costs 500 Afghanis, or eight US dollars, to visit the park. The average wage for a government worker in Afghanistan is around 100 US dollars a month. "There is no doubt that there was three decades of war in our country but God willing we are so delighted right now to have such a park in our city, that we can enjoy with our children and family here," he said. Children, some of whom got their faces painted to look like furry animals, seemed well-aware of the violence and conflict in their country. "The Afghan government must do their best to bring stable security and peace in our country. Since the establishment of the new government, violence has increased not only in Kabul but in all 34 provinces. We need peace, we need to enjoy our life and the government must pave the ground for more entertainment and such freedom for children," 12-year-old Mohammad Ihsan said. Face painter Latifa Jan said she wanted to set an example to other women and girls in the country. "We are tired of suicide attacks and explosions in our country, we want to have peace, we want to have a stable and developed Afghanistan, we want to see Afghanistan moving forward like other countries in the world. That is why I opened this business here, to encourage other women, that they can work outside their homes if they want," she said. The Afghan government and the departing NATO troops have tried to put a brave face on the security situation, despite the past 12 months having been the bloodiest since 2001, with thousands of Afghans dying in fighting. The Taliban has again stepped up attacks across the country as well as in the capital, Kabul, sensing an opportunity as foreign troops wound up their combat missions at the end of December 2014.
